The trade
Using that light, the leaf rearranges 6 water and 6 carbon dioxide molecules into 1 sugar and 6 oxygen.

What the plant keeps
The sugar travels down to feed the roots and stem. The oxygen leaves the leaf, and that is the part we breathe.
